Diabetes Management Recommendations

Insulin delivery and blood glucose testing are two components of successful diabetes management, however there are several other important components and recommendations that are included in the overall diabetes management program. The following recommendations are in accordance with the American Diabetes Association Standards of Medical Care for People with Diabetes 2003.

Self-monitoring of blood glucose should be performed multiple times daily.

Discuss individual targets with your health care provider.

A1C should be monitored 3-4 times a year.

Blood pressure should be checked at every visit to your health care provider. Recommended BP targets are 130/80 or less.

Blood lipids should be checked annually. Recommended lipid targets are LDL less than 100, HDL greater than 40 and triglycerides less than 150.

Urine microalbumin should be checked annually.

Dilated eye exam should be performed annually.

Complete foot exam should be performed annually.

Flu vaccination annually.

Aspirin therapy for all adults 30 years or older. Discuss with health care provider for individual dosing.

Smoking cessation programs should be continuously recommended.

Yearly physical exam including female and male specific topics.

Diabetes self-management education that includes nutrition, self management skills, physical activity and mental health counseling should be provided as needed in order to reach diabetes management targets for individuals.

These recommendations are the minimum for assuring successful, long-term diabetes management. Discuss these and other topics with your health care provider.
