Q. Will Abbott Diabetes Care (ADC) continue to supply FreeStyle test strips? A. Due to the popularity of the FreeStyle, FreeStyle Flash and FreeStyle Freedom meters--millions of patients use these meters every day--Abbott Diabetes Care (ADC) will continue to supply FreeStyle test strips. ADC has no plans to discontinue supply of FreeStyle test strips. FreeStyle and FreeStyle Lite test strips can be found at leading pharmacies, mail order companies and durable medical equipment suppliers.
In 2007, ADC introduced the FreeStyle Lite blood glucose monitoring system and the FreeStyle Lite test strip. In March 2008, ADC launched the new FreeStyle Freedom Lite blood glucose monitoring system, which also uses the FreeStyle Lite test strip.
It is important that users of FreeStyle blood glucose monitoring systems use the correct test strip for their meter. The FreeStyle Lite and FreeStyle Freedom Lite systems use only the FreeStyle Lite test strip. Q. What is the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module? A.The CoZmonitor® blood glucose module is a device which attaches to the back of the Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump to create the first-ever “all-in-one” insulin pump and blood glucose module. The CoZmonitor® blood glucose module uses the pump’s display and keypad to show the screens necessary to perform a BG test, and to allow you to program and deliver a bolus if needed. The CoZmonitor® blood glucose module automatically stores all BG tests in the history of the Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump. The CoZmonitor® blood glucose module is available in the U.S. only.
Q. How does the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module communicate with the Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump? A.The CoZmonitor® blood glucose module easily attaches to the back of the Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump and communicates with the pump via infrared (IR) technology. The pump and CoZmonitor® blood glucose module “talk” to each other using the 2 small infrared (IR) windows found on the back of each device.
Q. Why infrared (IR) communications? A.IR communication provides a wireless, secure transfer of data between your Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump and the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module because the pump and the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module attach directly to each other. For additional security, IR has a “line-of-sight” requirement and cannot pass through walls. Data communicated using IR can be transmitted at extremely high speeds (up to 4 Mbps).
Q. When will the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module become available? A.The CoZmonitor® blood glucose module is available now. (U.S. only)
Q. Does the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module use the Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump battery? A.The CoZmonitor® blood glucose module uses its own battery. We recommend that you keep a replacement battery on hand. Once the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module battery becomes too low for proper operation, a pump alarm will occur and “ Battery Low Change blood glucose meter battery as soon as possible” will appear in the pump display.
Q. What type of battery does the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module require? A.The CoZmonitor® blood glucose module requires one 2032 coin-cell battery. This type of battery can generally be purchased wherever batteries are sold.
Q. What is the battery life of the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module? A.The battery life will depend on the number of BG tests that are completed. On average, you should be able to complete at least 400 BG tests using one battery.
Q. Will the Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump battery life change with the use of the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module? A.Because the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module has its own battery, there is very little effect on the Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump battery life when using the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module. The Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump battery life has more to do with the rates that insulin is infused and the type of alarms that are personalized.
Q. Is the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module included with the purchase of a Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump? A.When you purchase the Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump the entire CozMore® insulin technology system is included. The CozMore® insulin technology system consists of the Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump, the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module, and the CoZmanager®PC communications software.(U.S. only)
Q. How much does the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module cost? A.There is no charge for the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module.(U.S. only) It is considered a component in the CozMore® insulin technology system which is included with a Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump purchase.
Q. What test strips does the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module use? A.The CoZmonitor® blood glucose module is powered by FreeStyle™. You must use only FreeStyle™Test Strips and FreeStyle™Control Solution with the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module. Other products can give you inaccurate results. The CoZmonitor® blood glucose module uses the same FreeStyle™Test Strips as the FreeStyle™ blood glucose monitoring system and the FreeStyle Flash™ blood glucose monitoring system.
Q. Are the Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump and the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module waterproof? A.While the Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump is waterproof, the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module is not. Do not immerse the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module in any liquid. Before bathing, swimming, or any other water activities, you must remove the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module from the pump. The CoZmonitor® blood glucose module is not waterproof and should also be removed before bedtime for young children that have bed wetting tendencies.
Q. How big is the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module? A.The CoZmonitor® blood glucose module dimensions are 3.0 inches high, 1.2 inches wide, and 0.3 inches thick (about the thickness of three sticks of gum).
Q. What is the weight of the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module? A.Including the battery, the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module weighs less than an ounce.
Q. How long does it take to do a test? A.The time that the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module takes depends on your blood glucose level. The higher your blood glucose level, the longer it takes to get a result. Results appear in an average of 7 seconds.
Q. How does the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module attach to the Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump? A.The CoZmonitor® blood glucose module “piggy backs” on to the Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump. The CoZmonitor® blood glucose module snaps on to the Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump by hooking under the cartridge cap and the new pump battery cap that is provided with the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module.
Q. Will I have to detach the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module to communicate with the CoZmanager® PC communications software? A.Yes, the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module communicates with the same two IR windows on the back of the Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump as the CoZmanager® PC communications software.
Q. How much blood is required to do a test? A.Testing with the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module requires a very small sample size, just 0.3 of a microliter of blood; about the size of a pinhead.
Q. What sites can I use when doing a test? A.Because the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module is powered by FreeStyle™, you can do the testing on blood samples from your finger, forearm, upper arm, thigh, calf or hand. We recommend that you test on your fingers or palm at the base of your thumb if you are testing for hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) or if you suffer from hypoglycemia unawareness. Differences in blood glucose measurements between the other test sites and your finger or palm may be observed at times when your blood glucose is rapidly changing, such as after eating, insulin medication, or exercise. This should be taken into consideration and a test result from your finger or palm at the base of your thumb should be obtained before adjusting the pump for your insulin therapy.
Q. How does the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module measure my BG? A.The CoZmonitor® blood glucose module uses coulometric technology to convert the blood sample’s entire glucose content into an electrical charge, allowing for smaller sampling size.
Q. Why do I need a different pump battery cap when I use the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module? Can I use this new battery cap even if I do not have the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module snapped on to my pump? A.You will need to replace your pump’s existing battery cap with the one provided with the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module. The pump battery cap included with your CoZmonitor® blood glucose module is slightly longer than the original battery cap that was included with your Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump. The longer length battery cap allows space for the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module to “snap” on to the pump. You can use the new battery cap on your Deltec Cozmo® insulin pump even if you do not have the CoZmonitor® blood glucose module attached.
Q. What is FreeStyle™ Control Solution and when should I use it? A.FreeStyle™Control Solution is a red liquid that contains a fixed amount of glucose. Use only FreeStyle™Control Solution with your CoZmonitor® blood glucose module or your results may not be accurate. The control solution has three important uses:
To practice testing without having to use your own blood
To insure that your module and test strips are working together properly
To check that you are following the correct testing procedure
